Rev. Betty Sue Sherrod reading her Poem

A Poem For Stephen W. Liston

With my guitar in hand, I bring my head down close and pluck the string.
I watch as the simple, solitary string changes into a vibrating column,
a stack of blurred grooves.
It moves from side to side at a speed too fast for the eye to follow.
But caught at both ends and held in place,
The string is suspended in
This thin place between,
This atmosphere.
The string’s center is free—free to vibrate, free to hum.
Stephen’s life was held.
It was held at both ends, kept safe and anchored in his joy and in sacred sound
So that his center was free.
His life was free to vibrate, to hum in this thin place between,
This atmosphere that we call life.
He hummed with every fiber of his voice and every molecule of his being.
If we bring our heads down close and pluck the string,
We will hear,
He is still free.

His Journey's Just Begun

Don't think of him as gone away-
his journey's just begun,
life holds so many facets-
this earth is only one.

Just think of him as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.

Think how he must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.

And think of him as living
in the hearts of those he touched . . .
for nothing loved is ever lost -
and he was loved so much.

My Valentine for Stephen

Your life was cut short, for reasons unknown
You had much to offer, still God showed you home.
Away that you went when Jesus said, "Come."
Are you now playing for our Savior, as you so eagerly did us?

Forget you I won't, you showed me much passion.
Of music, of life, and your awesome romancing.
One look in those eyes, was all that it took.
For in that one instant, I simply was hooked.

27 years this month, now it has been,
the last time I saw you,
you were looking quite grim.
For now was the time to return to California.
I could see you were sad, while I searched in your eyes;
a tear nearly dropped as you started to speak,
"I'm really not ready, you know; -to leave you just yet."

While searching my friend, almost 30 years later,
I sadly discovered you had already gone.
Just two weeks two late, who knew that could be.
I'm sure that it was God's timing, what else would it be.
For if we had been reacquainted,
even more devastated, I truly would be.

Although I just 17, and you 23,
there was a tight bond only you and I knew.
We parted our ways, and said, "See you later."
You touched my heart then, as I know I did yours;
only a moment was allowed, for that was the end.

I thank you dear Stephen for showing compassion,
to the eager, shy girl that easily excepted.
Without sharing your heart, as you did long ago,
I would not have such memories
you leave for me now.

I go on trying not to be sad.
No more being mad, because I was late;
when thinking of you, I chose to be glad.
God gave me a gift, not meaning for keeps,
the gift he has given me, was a season with you.

May you go in peace Stephen, and God have you now.
I will be coming one day, for a promise I have.
To all who choose Jesus -to save you your soul,
will one day share Paradise--with God and all who have chose.

No sense in saying goodbye, we didn't say it before.
Yet it's my turn, to shed a sad tear, while telling you now-

"I'm really not ready, you know- to leave you just yet."
as we are parting our ways, you do know the line...
"I'll see you later," when it is time.

Your friend,
 Marilyn
