Memory of the Journey
is Stephen Liston's 2nd studio recorded CD Album. It features 18 selections from 6 different 19th century composers.
Isaac Albéniz
The Memory of the Journey CD insert has a brief bio of each of the original composers. Typical: |
Isaac Albéniz 1860 – 1909 Spanish composer and pianist Like Mozart, a piano prodigy at age four, Isaac Albeniz so astounded audiences with his performance that trickery was suspected. At age nine, he entered the conservatory, but soon ran away to concertize throughout Castile. By age 12, he was a stowaway on a ship, leading a precarious life in Latin America and the U.S. His teenage years were spend wandering in Europe, eventually traveling with Liszt, with whom he perfected his piano technique. In his early twenties, he settled in Barcelona and began an association with Felipe Pedrell who inspired him to create music with truly Spanish roots. His most fruitful period began in Paris in 1893 where he became close friends with d’Indy, Fauré, Debussy and Dukas. Their exchange of ideas helped create the impressionist style. His piano writing directly influenced both Debussy and Ravel. Unfortunately, his health deteriorated and his last years were spent working on his masterpiece, Suite Iberia for piano. He died in 1909 a few days before his 49th birthday. |
